Buy Discount Restaurant Certificates for Cheaper Date Nights

February 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Last night, my wife and I celebrated our 4th anniversary with a night out on the town.  Without going into too many details, it was awesome!  You can learn more about the details from my last blog entry. I plan to blog my review about Ester’s Follies at a later time (in short it was incredible).  Today, I want to talk about my latest money saving tip.  A few months ago, I came across a website called Restaurant.com. The website allows you to buy discount certificates for restaurants of all cuisines, locations, ambiance, etc. There typical offer is: Buy a $25 certificate for $10.

They describe the “service” they provide in the following manner:

“Restaurant.com is about celebrating the dining experience more affordably. We provide certificates for literally thousands of great restaurants – many of them right in your neighborhood – that bring you the fun and pleasure of eating out while spending less. Sound too good to be true? Not at all. Restaurant owners like us because we bring them new customers. And you’ll like us because we’re such a convenient way to enjoy an evening out whenever you want without busting the budget.”

I put the website to the test for our date night.  I used it to find a romantic restaurant, Louie’s 106, and then I purchased a $25 certificate (see image).

An example of $25 certificate from restaurant.com

It did have some fine print:

Special Instructions: Valid for dinner. Min. purchase $35. Excludes 5/20-21, 2/14, 12/31, alcohol. Present before order.

I’m happy to say that the waiter accepted the certificate without a problem.  In the end, it saved us $15.  This was definitely a positive lesson learned and we will be repeat customers.  I highly recommend the website to anyone looking to save money.
