Find Cheap Flights

January 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

On my quest to become successful in life and personal finance, I’m always on the lookout for ways to be more efficent with my time when looking for money saving solutions. Sometimes, it takes too much work to save trying to save a few dollars, especially when it takes an additional 30 mins to 1 hr of my time.  One of those examples is looking for cheap flights, cheap hotels, and cheap rental cars. If you are extremely frugal like me, you try to find the best deal. Well, this can be very time consuming because there are a multitude of resource for these types of purchases, such as Expedia, Priceline, Travelzoo, etc… Let alone visiting the actual vendors sites, such as American, Delta, Hertz, Alamo, etc.

Recently, I got a tip from a co-worker. He suggested I checkout a website called Kayak.com.  Kayak is not just another travel website, its a travel search engine.  Which means we crawls (searches) hundreds of travel sites from all over the world, provide the information to you in an easy-to-use display and send you directly to the source to make your purchase.  After all, what good are 1000 options when you can’t find the flight you want? Once you make your choice, we link to the travel sites to make your purchase. Kayak allows you to choose which site to purchase from– through an online travel agency or consolidator such as Orbitz or Airfare.com.

Here the summary of the benefits I’ve already seen by using it.

  1. Saves me time (one stop shopping, I know longer have to go multiple websites)Kayak.com searches all websites
  2. Saves me money by search all of the possible discount websites (I typically limited my searches to my favorite sites)
  3. I can shop by rewards programs. (I try to keep my miles on American OneWorld)Kayak.com allows you to select flights by airline and miles partners

This website has been a time saver and a money saver. Are there lessons you’ve learned when researching cheap flights? Are their other websites you would recommend?
